Ebook About The New York Times Bestseller that explores animal intelligence and will alter the way we as humans view other species. Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a fish? Or a parrot, dolphin, or an elephant? Do they experience thoughts that are similar to ours, or have feelings of grief and love? These are tough questions, but scientists are answering them. They know that ants teach and rats love to be tickled. They’ve discovered that dogs have thousand-word vocabularies and that birds practice their songs in their sleep. But how do scientists know these things?Animal Wise takes us on a dazzling odyssey into the inner world of animals and among the pioneering researchers who are leading the way into once-uncharted territory: the animal mind. Morell uses her formidable gifts as a storyteller to transport us to field sites and laboratories around the world, introducing us to animal-cognition scientists and their surprisingly intelligent and sensitive subjects. She explores how this rapidly evolving, controversial field has only recently overturned old notions about why animals behave as they do. In this surprising and moving book, Morell brings the world of nature brilliantly alive in a nuanced, deeply felt appreciation of the human-animal bond.Book Animal Wise: How We Know Animals Think and Feel Review :
Required to read this book for my advanced Human and Animals in Human Services course. The book introduces specific animals from case studies that the author herself has had the opportunity to meet with first hand. This book has completely changed the way I view ants. Who would of thought that one little ant could be so crucial to the entire society. It's amazing to read about each animal discussed in this book and their different cognitive skills in relation to ours. I am much more sensitive to all animals, this book has truly opened my eyes. Must read for any animal lover! I have been writing about the environment and endangered species for more than 30 years. I have also interviewed dozens of respected ecologists and animal experts, but few have managed to walk the line between story and facts as well as Virginia Morell. Why is this important? Because as a species, humans are storytellers. We need to understand AND feel how information impacts us personally. Why should we care about how ants interact? Why are the social dramas of dolphins relevant to our lives? And who cares if fish feel? The short answer to these questions is because we are not alone on the planet. We share it with and are irrevocably dependent on a rich web of life. We ignore this fact at our own peril. Moreover, we can no longer pretend to be emotionally and intellectually removed from other creatures. Our ability to not only understand but relate to and feel empathy for other living things is vital to our health and survival as a species. Why? Because it is only by learning to respect and care for other living things that we will protect them. We must understand that by protecting other species, and the ecosystems they inhabit, we are investing in our own survival; we are protecting the delicate balance that supports our lives. All of the above aside, "Animal Wise" is a great read. You will marvel at the linguistic abilities of parrots, laugh at the alliances and sexual antics of dolphins (which rival any soap opera for sheer drama and intrigue), and be totally transported by the stories of people who have devoted their lives to the study of animals. Some, like Jane Goodall the famous chronicler of the lives of chimpanzees, will be familiar. Others, like Nigel Franks - a "middle-aged and slight rumpled..." entomologist with "...a full beard, graying dark hair, and brown eyes..." will be delightful new acquaintances. His ingenious methods for studying ants will amaze, entertain, and touch your heart. Most importantly, you will come away from "Animal Wise" understanding how your life is enriched by these remarkable creatures. Well done!
